Add a watermark to PDF pages with a clear plan

A watermark is a visible word, phrase, or image placed on a document page. A draft proposal may need a pale DRAFT label; a report sent for review may need a department name; a set of slides may need a small logo. This watermark PDF tool adds one text or image design to the pages you select and saves a new PDF. You can mark every page, one specified page, or a list of pages and ranges. Before export, compare the original and marked appearance of each page layout in the file.

The selected PDF and image are processed in your browser. There is no document upload or account step in this workflow. The application still loads ordinary site assets, including the font used for text watermarks, from its own host. This is a visible labeling tool. A watermark does not enforce viewing permissions, prevent someone from copying content, or prove who made a document. If a file contains sensitive information, choose a suitable sharing and access control method separately.

How to add a text watermark to a PDF
  1. Add a PDF. Choose one file up to 30 MB with 1 to 200 pages. The tool reads its page sizes, visible crop areas, rotation, and page count. A password protected file or interactive form is reported as unsupported.
  2. Type the label. Choose Text and enter one line of up to 100 characters. Set the font size and a six-digit color. A light gray label often keeps the page readable, while a darker label may be easier to see on photographs.
  3. Choose pages and appearance. Set all pages, one page number, or a range such as 2-4,7. Adjust opacity, rotation, and position. Repeated tile places several copies where they fit, or reports that the design is too large to repeat.
  4. Preview the layouts. Compare before and after on the representative page numbers shown in the plan. A mixed A4 and Letter document or a rotated sheet can have more than one layout. Check each displayed example before export becomes available.
  5. Download and reopen. Create the marked PDF, download the copy, and inspect all pages in a PDF reader. The checker confirms the exported PDF opens, its page count matches, and page geometry remains intact. Visual judgment still belongs to you.
Use an image or logo as the watermark

Switch to Image and choose a PNG or JPG from your device. The image is limited to 10 MB and 10 megapixels. The browser decodes common camera orientation before embedding it. A PNG with transparent areas keeps that transparency, making a logo or stamp less likely to appear inside an unwanted white rectangle. A JPG has no alpha channel, so its rectangular background remains visible. Check the preview closely if a brand mark includes pale edges, a white background, or tiny text.

Image width is specified as a percentage of the visible page width, from 5 to 80 percent. This means an image watermark adapts to different paper sizes instead of using the same number of points on every page. Its height follows the image's aspect ratio. The PDF is not stretched to match the mark. The tool positions the mark within each page's crop area and accounts for quarter turn page rotation. You can also set opacity, angle, and a corner or center position. The color and font size controls apply only to text marks.

All pages, one page, and ranges

All pages is appropriate for a repeated status label on a report. One specified page is useful for a cover, review copy, or a section divider. A range lets you leave a signed cover or a final attachment unmarked while labeling the body. Page numbers here mean physical positions in the PDF, starting at 1. They may differ from printed numbers on the sheets. A range such as 2-4,7 targets the second through fourth physical pages and the seventh. Invalid, reversed, duplicate, empty, or out of bounds selections are stopped before export.

The result keeps the unselected pages in place. It does not extract only the marked pages, change their order, or replace the original file. The status message tells you how many pages were checked and how many received a watermark. When you need different words on different pages, make separate passes on saved copies with distinct page selections, and inspect the final file after each pass. The current tool applies one design per run to one PDF; it does not batch process multiple separate files.

Position, opacity, angle, and repeated tile

The position menu offers the center, edge and corner anchors, and a repeated tile. A center mark usually reads as a document status. A small top or bottom corner logo may leave the main body clear. The selected anchor is calculated from the visible page area, including a margin, rather than copied blindly from the first sheet. The mark is rotated around its own center. A long line of text can reach farther across the page after rotation than its unrotated width suggests. If the rotated bounds exceed the page, reduce the font size or image width.

Opacity ranges from 5 to 100 percent. Lower opacity helps the original content remain legible, but a very faint mark can disappear on a pale background or printer. Full opacity is conspicuous and may cover words, signatures, chart labels, or stamps. Use the before and after preview to judge the actual pages. Repeated tile arranges multiple copies using the available width and height of each sheet. If the mark cannot repeat at its current size, the tool asks you to shrink it instead of silently making a single mark and calling that a tile.

Chinese characters and other special text

Text watermarks use an embedded Noto Sans CJK font rather than relying on the viewer's local fonts. This supports Chinese text and many common punctuation and symbol characters, including the copyright sign. The tool checks whether every character you entered exists in the font and reports an unsupported character instead of exporting blank squares. Emoji and some uncommon scripts are outside the font's coverage. For those, create a PNG watermark with the appearance you need or use a different supported phrase.

The full font is embedded to preserve correct rendering and text extraction across PDF readers. That can add roughly fourteen megabytes even when the source PDF is small. File size matters if you will email the output or upload it to a system with a strict limit. An image mark may yield a smaller PDF, but the exact bytes depend on the image. Reopen the exported file in a second reader if the marks include names, Chinese characters, mathematical symbols, or other text whose accuracy matters.

Preview before sharing

A preview is required for every distinct combination of visible page size and rotation among the selected pages. That gate matters for a document containing a portrait A4 report, a landscape Letter table, and a sideways scanned attachment. The tool shows an original and marked one-page PDF side by side for each representative layout. You can change the preview page within the selected scope to inspect extra pages. Altering the text, image, range, or styling clears the earlier approval, because it no longer describes the result you are about to create.

A representative layout cannot detect every variation in content. A signature may appear only on one of several same-size pages, or a chart may occupy the center of a page that otherwise matches the sample. Check such pages separately before export and reopen the complete download. Look at headings, signatures, form fields, stamps, handwritten notes, and page numbers. A visible annotation or an embedded image can occupy the same area as the mark. The tool flags that annotations exist but cannot decide whether covering one is acceptable.

What the tool preserves and what it cannot promise

The watermark is drawn onto the PDF page as text or an image layer. The document keeps its page count, paper sizes, crop areas, and quarter turn page rotations. Existing page text and images are not intentionally removed. The output is saved as a new file. However, PDF documents can contain signatures, forms, layers, actions, attachments, and unusual fonts. Editing a digitally signed PDF can invalidate its certificate signature even if the visible page still looks the same. Interactive form PDFs are refused by this version; flatten or finalize them using a suitable workflow before adding a mark.

Password protected and damaged PDFs are not supported. Very large or complicated pages may need more browser memory than an ordinary document. The 30 MB input and 200 page caps keep work bounded, but they are not performance guarantees. This tool adds a visible watermark only. It does not remove an existing watermark, replace a source file, redact hidden content, prevent copying, or apply access restrictions. If you need to permanently hide private text, a pale word over it is not redaction; use a proper redaction process and verify the underlying information has gone.

How do I put the same watermark on every page?

Leave Apply to set to All pages. Enter text or choose an image, then set its appearance. Preview each representative paper layout shown in the plan, export, and reopen the entire PDF to check the mark on every page.

How can I keep a watermark from covering the body text?

Lower the opacity, reduce the font size or image width, and try a corner position. Use the side by side preview, including extra pages with signatures or charts. A repeated tile can cover more of the page, so test it carefully.

Why do Chinese watermarks sometimes appear as boxes?

A PDF generator may use a font without the needed glyphs or fail to embed the font. This tool embeds a complete CJK font and checks the typed characters before saving. Unsupported symbols produce an error rather than a misleading PDF.

Can I watermark only certain pages?

Yes. Choose One specified page or Page range. Enter physical page positions such as 2-4,7; all other pages remain in the output without a new mark.

Does a watermark stop copying or remove an old mark?

No. It adds a visible layer and does not enforce access control. Existing watermarks are not removed. Use document permissions and an appropriate sharing process for access, and use redaction when content must be hidden.
